Windows Vista delayed

Microsoft has pushed back the consumer release of Windows Vista, saying it won't be available until January. That misses the critical holiday shopping season. Business versions will still be available in November. Jim Allchin, the Windows chief, announced the news in a conference call with reporters this afternoon, saying quality testing would cause a delay of "a few weeks." That, in turn, required changing the retail release schedule. More details to come. Update: Here's an initial take from longtime PC industry analyst Roger Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates: "It's terrible. It's a big blow. ... Vista was supposed to be the big juice for the season. ... It's going to cause a real dent in holiday PC sales to consumers." See coverage by the Associated Press, Reuters and CNet News.com. Update II: More coverage and analysis: Citing anonymous sources, the Wall Street Journal reports in Wednesday's edition that the company is "planning a major management shake-up in its Windows group," in addition to delaying the release. Bloomberg News: "Microsoft may lose almost $500 million in sales in the December quarter without Vista, said Charles Di Bona, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein in New York, who rates the shares a 'buy.' Some of that may be made up by rising Xbox sales, he said. Windows for PCs generated $12 billion of revenue for Microsoft in the year ended June 30." Joe Wilcox, Microsoft Monitor: Understanding Windows Vista's delay.
