Wine Blogging Wednesday 17 - Red Kiwi

3rd Jan 2006, 23:55 GMT

Filed under: Wine, On the Blogs, New Zealand New Zealand is rightly famed for its delicious Sauvignon Blanc's- the crisp, powerfully pronounced, asparagus/ grapefruit/grassy/gooseberry wines set a new benchmark for the variety and fame across the world. But there is more to New Zealand than just Sauvignons. There are gewurztraminers, wines from pinot gris and of course red varieties. CorkDork has selected Red Kiwis as the theme for round 17 of Wine Blogging Wednesday which just happens to occur tomorrow. This is one of my fave blog-happenings - I hosted way back with a theme of unusual red varieties - as it always gives a push to try something new. In the past I have seen Syrah based wines from New Zealand and know of a small planting of Zinfandel too. But in the UK at least it is Pinot Noir that dominates the shelves. As with all wines from New Zealand production is small, costs are relatively high resulting in wines that are not cheap. The bottle I selected came in at £10 which is about the cheapest I saw. Not that I was looking for the cheapest mind, it just happened to be from the same producer as a rather good Sauvignon I tried a few days ago; so I am keen to see if the quality continues into their reds too. Keep an eye on Cork Dork for a round-up of Wine Blogging Wednesday later in the week. I am sure there will be many interesting wines unearthed.
