Putting firepower in the firewall
13th Nov 2006, 08:04 GMT
Here we are, nearly 2007, and we?re still being deluged with spam and malware. Didn?t Bill Gates say a couple of years ago that the tide would have turned by now? And yet it has become significantly worse, particularly over the past six months. It?s not even as if the attacks are particularly sophisticated. Web designers have known for years that if they want to send an image of text then the way to do it with minimal bandwidth is to use a gif-format image. So now we?re being barraged with gif-format spam attachments accompanied by real (though irrelevant) text ? and this is enough to defeat commercial spam filters. It?s surprising the spammers took so long to catch on to this wheeze.
