Sun Microsystems Lifts the Lid on Java

In an effort to encourage developer collaboration and innovation based on the widely adopted Java platform, Sun Microsystems is releasing the code for the Java programming language, marking one of the biggest contributions to the open-source community under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Available today are the first pieces of source code for the Java Standard Edition (Java SE) and Micro Edition (Java ME) software. At the same time, Sun is now adding the GPL Version 2 license to its Enterprise Edition offering, previously released under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) through Project GlassFish. As a result of these moves, the vast open-source community will have access to the language and specifications that comprise software found in some 3.8 billion products, including desktop machines, mobile phones, and smart cards. New, Improved Software The initial offering from Sun includes Java HotSpot technology, the Java programming language compiler (javac), and JavaHelp software. HotSpot is Sun's implementation of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and the core component of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which translates Java code to the specific operating system and chips used in a particular machine. By offering the Java platforms under the common GPL license, Sun hopes software developers will create updated versions of Java SE, Java EE, and Java ME together. "The decision to open source Java was expected, since Sun has been talking about it for a while," said Forrester Research analyst Michael Goulde. "And opening the Java SE and ME platforms makes sense since the company already opened the enterprise version under Project GlassFish." The difference this time, Goulde said, is that Sun is dual-licensing the Enterprise Edition software under the GPL and CDDL.
