16th Nov 2006, 20:04 GMT
From Cellular-News.com GSM subscribers in Latin America grew 79% in a twelve-month period. According to Informa there are 83 million more GSM subscribers in Latin America this year which pushes the Latin American GSM subscriber total to 189 million. “Before the end of this year, the milestone of 200 million GSM subscriptions will be reached in Latin America and the Caribbean,” says Informa’s Eva Benguigui. Worldwide, GSM subscribers increased by 500 million for the year, which lifts the GSM global market share to 83%. Other technologies except CDMA suffered a decline. Hutchison 3G is coming out with the X-Series HSDPA handset and services package in partnership with Skype, Yahoo!, Sling Media, Nokia, Google, eBay, Orb, Sony Ericsson and Microsoft bringing a full load of multi-media services. Handset owners will be able to make calls through Skype, browse through Yahoo!, Yahoo and Windows Live Mobile, use Slingbox to connect to their TV at home and with Orb remotely connect to their PC. The service is priced like a fixed broadband. Nokia N73 and the Sony Ericsson W950i are the first two handsets that can use the service. There’s a fair usage clause though, so heavy users may have to pay more.
