Last week, Angela Merkel became Germany's first female chancellor, ending an uncomfortable period of political uncertainty. While the equity market had hoped and expected that the German electorate would give Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) an unequivocal mandate to carry out pro-business reforms, the resolution of weeks of political wrangling has been welcomed and expectations of economic change remain high.
