It is hard to overstate the corrosive impact that the protracted police investigation into the cash-for-honours affair has had on the body politic. The steady drip of disclosure has perhaps had the effect of inuring the public to the true significance of this inquiry — that the very probity of Tony Blair and his administration is now being tested to destruction.
