Symantec Takes Microsoft to Court

19th May 2006, 17:10 GMT

In 1996, Microsoft made a deal with Veritas, which allowed Microsoft to use Veritas volume management technology in Windows. In 2005 Veritas was purchased by Symantec for $10.2 billion, and Symantec does not want Microsoft using the technology. Robert McMillan of IDG News Service pretty much sums up the argument: Symantec claims that Microsoft misappropriated its technology and even tricked the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office into granting Microsoft patents based on Symantec intellectual property. The security and storage vendor also says that portions of Microsoft's next-generation Vista and "Longhorn" server OSes are based on this misappropriated software. Microsoft believes it has every right to use the Veritas technology, the company said in a statement. "These claims are unfounded because Microsoft actually purchased intellectual property rights for all relevant technologies from Veritas in 2004," Microsoft said. "The [1996] contract ultimately gave Microsoft the option to buy out the rights to Veritas? code and intellectual property." Symantec went on to say that the contract is supposed to stop Microsoft from creating products that compete with Veritas, but that Vista has features that do compete. The fate of this case will be decided in the U.S. District Court in Seattle. Add to document.write("Del.icio.us") | DiggThis | Yahoo! My Web Technorati: microsoft, symantec
