Google announced today that it will open a research and development center in Taiwan and has hired Dr. Lee-Feng Chien, a former deputy director of the Academia Sinica Institute of Information Science in Taiwan, to lead the operation. The center will mainly focus itself on the Chinese market. Google is aspiring to hire local talent to improve their quality and quantity of research and development in their new R&D center, according to Dr Kai-Fu Lee, Vice President, Engineering and President of Google Greater China. He also said that he is glad to have Chien on board, as he is one of the top experts in the field of information retrieval, which makes him the right person for this job. Chien, who is known internationally for his work on Chinese data processing, has researched Chinese parsing systems, language models, dictation machines, and search engineering technology for many years and is very confident about his new job. He believes continuous innovative R&D is an important underpinning of effective data search and therefore is glad that there'll be a new establishment in Taiwan. According to Chien the new R&D center will allow Google to recruit and cultivate a new group of outstanding talent, and provide even better products and services for Chinese users, as well as to users around the world. Apart from hiring Chien to head the center, Google will also recruit researchers from Taiwan and abroad. By bringing in local talent to enhance Google's search technology development capabilities, Google is extending the company's dynamic culture of cultivating gifted technology talent.
