Cell phone ownership among preteens is rising

We’ve talked here before about children and their cell phones. It’s no surprise that cell phone use among kids is growing, especially the preteen market according to Monday’s article in USA Today. Companies like Mattel, Disney, and LeapFrog are in the midst of putting their kid-friendly phones on the market, hoping for maximum appeal to the 10-14 year-old crowd. It’s estimated that 14 percent of 10- and 11-year-olds now have their own mobile phones, and that number is believed to be rising. As of December of last year, 40 percent of 12- to 14-year-olds had them.
