Kids can make cancer treatment choices

At Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital young cancer patients are helping to make pivotal decisions about the course of their cancer treatment. Research suggests children with terminal illnesses are not burdened by the full disclosure of their case but are rather good at hearing all the information and understanding all the options before them. Samantha Hinds is a 13-year-old cancer patient. Her cancer which has spread to her lungs. She is clear about what that might mean, “It can kill me and I know that,” she says. “This might be my last year or so here with my family. You just have to live it day by day.” She has decided to try an experimental chemotherapy drug, even though she knows it will not cure her. She hopes it will give researchers more information which may save other lives down the road. This article made me think of Katie Werneckie, who’s parents refused to follow the cancer treatment the state mandated for their daughter.
