Singapore teen may face jailtime for internet access

Filed under: Tech Tuesdays, Teenager, 15-19 years, Computers, Internet Here in the US, wireless networking is becoming almost ubiquitous. Virtually all laptops, most PDA's, and an awful lot of desktops are sold ready to hook up wirelessly right out of the box. But what if you don't have a wireless network? When I'm in the office, I occasionally get connected to somebody somewhere's home network. My neighbor's have, in the past, ended up connected to mine at home. I never saw it as a big deal; I had plenty of bandwidth to share. In Singapore, however, they are quite so cavalier. Known for having banned chewing gum and bungee jumping, Singapore is a rather strict place. So it is comes as not such a great surprise that a 17-year-old boy is facing up to three years in jail and a fine of nearly $4,000US. He did what my neighbors did and what I have done on occasion -- he connected to the neighbor's wireless network. It's not clear from the article whether this was intentional or accidental; computers may simply select the strongest available signal. This seems a might harsh to me, but given that this is the first time someone has been charged under Singapore's Computer Misuse Act, I have hopes that the courts will show some sense and let this go, if there was no malicious intent.
