Smoking Study Suspended Due to Privacy Breach

Someone arranging a school reunion disclosed personal information about research subjects involved in a smoking study at Indiana University. As a result the 25-year study has been suspended. The study was halted by the school's Institutional Review Board, but is expected to resume soon. The Smoking Survey began in 1980 as a survey of 8,500 students in Monroe County middle schools and high schools. Follow-up surveys using mail and the Internet have been conducted as recently as last year. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and is reportedly the longest-running U.S. study of smoking attitudes and behaviors in the same subjects.
