As part of plans to lower the rate of diabetes in the country, regular testing for the disease will be conducted from 2007 as part of general medical checks, such as for obtaining a driver's licence, according to Gulf News. One in four people in the UAE aged above 20 are affected by the disease, according to World Health Organisation figures; while the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi predicts that on current trends 65% of the population will have diabetes by 2010.
