Brazil 'rubber soldiers' fight for recognition

14th Nov 2006, 02:41 GMT

More that 60 years after the end of World War II, the forgotten “Rubber Soldiers” in Brazil are still waiting for promises once made to be fulfilled. Many of these men were forced into the service of harvesting rubber for the Allied war effort and some joined looking for adventure. Brought into poor working conditions, where many died to be forgotten in the jungles of the Amazon, many now are hoping that their country’s government will do right by them and compensate them for their years of abandonment. All have spent a life time waiting to return to their villages and most will never see their families that they left behind then. The rubber harvesting program was started after the Brazilian dictator Getúlio Vargas was persuaded to help fill the supply gap with credits and loans and equipment. Summary By Partisano
