Memorial held for fatally shot UCF officer

2nd Oct 2005, 13:50 GMT

ORLANDO, Fla. - The parents of a slain University of Central Florida police officer said at a memorial service on Saturday that they forgive the Orlando police officer who shot and killed their son. "Whoever shot that shot that went through my son's heart, his wonderful heart, I hope to meet you someday," Ramona Jenkins of Tarpon Springs said. "My husband and I forgive you." Officer Mario Jenkins, 29, was wearing street clothes and investigating underage drinking at tailgate parties Sept. 24 before a football game when he was shot outside the Citrus Bowl. He got into a scuffle with a student, fired his gun into the air and was then shot by reserve Orlando police officer Dennis Smith, witnesses said. Jenkins' widow, Valerie was one of many who spoke at the service. "You already know what a great Marine, officer and friend Mario was," she said. "I want to tell you what a great husband he was. I couldn't have asked for a better partner in crime." The state has launched an investigation into why the shooting occurred. Valerie Jenkins said she was initially told that her husband would be buried with full military honors at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, but she said military officials later denied her request because he had not served the minimum duty requirements. Jenkins was not buried on Saturday and UCF police officials said his body will remain at a funeral home until the Department of Veterans Affairs changes its position.
