Power out, Eau Gallie High students go home

11th Oct 2005, 06:43 GMT

A faulty electrical transformer that left classrooms in the dark and forced hundreds of students at Eau Gallie High School to be sent home early today should be replaced by Tuesday morning, according to Brevard County school officials. "We had another power failure and the folks at Florida Power & Light said they couldn't fix it. We are preparing to have school again tomorrow," said Sara Stern, spokeswoman for the Brevard County School District. School buses arrived by 11:30 a.m. to take students back home. "We're allowing them the opportunity to call their parents to let them know what's going on," Stern said. Those students with cars on campus were allowed to leave by 11 a.m. Parents were also able to pick up students at anytime, officials said. The high school, at 1400 Commodore Boulevard, has 2,396 students and is mostly windowless. The power outage appears isolated to the general area of the school. The new transformer was expected to arrive this afternoon. "They are going to work through the night to get it in place," Stern said. It was the latest power failure to hit the school in recent months. At least two others - including one caused by lightning - were reported before, officials said. FPL officials said that today's outage was caused by malfunctioning electrical equipment, said Sandy Sanderson, spokesman for FPL. Work crews arrived early in the afternoon to evaluate the electrical system at the school, he said. "Our concern was the students and teachers being in a hot building. There are some parts of the facility that have windows while other parts do not. There is not a lot of air circulation," Stern said. Stern said the school district was going to seek a waiver for any makeup day caused by the outage.
