John Birt, now strategy adviser to the Prime Minister and ennobled, has been a highly divisive figure ever since his controversial tenure as director-general of the BBC. An expert and pioneering programme-maker, he came across as a dogmatic and clumsy reformer. His self-imposed mission to rectify what he had earlier seen as the "bias against understanding", coupled with his fiercely market-orientated approach, provoked hostility in almost every one of the BBC's departments.
