Microsoft hit with $32 million fine in Korean antitrust case

7th Dec 2005, 17:40 GMT

Filed under: Audio, Windows, Commercial, News, Microsoft, Utilities Antitrust regulators in South Korea have fined Microsoft $32 million, saying the company was "blocking competition and leading to a monopoly in the market." While the fine isn't exactly a huge blow to Microsoft (isn't this the amount of money Microsoft makes in about five minutes?), South Korea's Fair Trade Commission has also demanded that Microsoft release versions of Windows that unbundle Windows Media Player and Messenger. Microsoft is expected to appeal, though the company has backed down on earlier threats to leave the Korean market if the Fair Trade Commission ruled against it. If the company loses, it may be forced to produce a version of Windows similar to Windows XP N, the slow-selling Media Player-free version the company has been required to sell in Europe.
