Markets slide as oil prices close higher

North American stock markets closed lower this afternoon as crude oil prices climbed higher even after a positive U.S. energy report showed inventories shrank less than expected after hurricane Katrina. On Wall Street, investors worried that the U.S. Federal Reserve would continue to raise interest rates at its Sept. 20 meeting and digested a mixed bag of economic and corporate news from Ford, Sears and EBay.
