Confirmation hearings for U.S. Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers are scheduled to begin Nov. 7, amid the surprisingly aloof controversy surrounding the White House counsel's close friendship with President George W. Bush. And now, more recently, there is the revelation that in 1989 she pledged to an anti-abortion group that she would ''actively support'' a constitutional amendment banning abortions (barring those performed to save a woman's life), participate in anti-abortion rallies and attempt to stop the use of public money to fund abortion clinics and organizations.
