SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Puerto Rico is nearing completion of the largest convention center in the Caribbean - the centerpiece of a redevelopment project that the U.S. island territory hopes will pump hundreds of millions of dollars (euros) into its economy. The convention center is scheduled to open Nov. 17 on a 113-acre (46-hectare) site on San Juan's Isla Grande peninsula, a former Navy base between the cruise ship terminal of Old San Juan and the high-rises of the Condado and Miramar districts. More than 70 events have been booked through June as workers complete hotel projects to meet the expected increase in visitors, said Manuel Sanchez Biscombe, executive director of the Puerto Rico's Convention Center District Authority. Construction of a 500-room Sheraton hotel is scheduled to start in November and to be completed in 2007. The foundation of a 110-unit residential building will be laid in December.
