Learning From Lloyd Cutler

My enduring memory of Lloyd Cutler, the ultimate Washington power broker, who died Sunday at 87, is not of him testifying before Congress or at some White House meeting or, even, the lunch we had after I whacked him in my column, but of me, Cutler and his wife, Polly Kraft, in a movie theater watching "There's Something About Mary." It was that infamous scene, the ultimate gross-out scene, the one I still cannot describe in a newspaper (the movie itself was rated R), and so I peeked over with apprehension to see how this pillar of the Washington establishment was taking it. He was in stitches. Lloyd Cutler, I tell you this, knew how to laugh.
