Boulder CO Voters Approve Nation's First Climate Tax

Last week the residents of Boulder Colorado approved the nation's first ever climate tax to fund greenhouse gas reduction projects in the area. The tax will be collected by the local electric utility company based on the amount of electricity used. The revenue from the new program will fund the city's Climate Action Plan (large PDF), which was approved by City Council in June 2006. Voters approved the Climate Tax ballot initiative 58% to 41%. The Democratic Energy website has an update on other renewable energy related ballot initiatives around the U.S: Voters in Washington approved a ballot initiative which requires electric utilities with 25,000 or more customers to meet targets for renewable energy generation and energy conservation; Residents of California rejected an oil extraction tax which was designed to fund more than $4 billion in clean energy programs to reduce reliance on oil and gas; Voters in Seattle WA approved an new property tax measure to fund transit ridership; and The residents of Grand Forks and Fargo North Dakota rejected an initiative which called for a 20% renewable energy portfolio standard (RPS) by 2020.
