S&P 500 closes at 6-year high; Dow gains 86 to record 12,218

U.S. stocks barreled higher yesterday, sending the Standard & Poor's 500 index to a six-year high, after profits at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp. exceeded forecasts and a Federal Reserve official suggested that interest rates will stay unchanged for now.
