Cancer survivor, who lost most of tongue, qualifies to become nurse

Filed under: Mouth Cancer Janette Astles thought she had a sore inside her mouth. She was midway through her training to become a nurse when she was diagnosed of cancer of the mouth. Astles lost four teeth, most of her tongue, and part of the floor of her mouth to the cancer. She has since had to re-learn how to eat and how to talk. However, she has been successful not only in re-learning these basic functions, but she has also recently completed her education, and has fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse. That is an amazingly inspirational story of determination. And best of all? She is already employed in a cardiology department in Scotland. She starts next week.
