Contradiction in conventional medicine for carotid arteries

University of Pittsburgh has broken new ground for stroke victims, by reopening totally blocked internal carotid arteries (ICA). This procedure can be done up to three days after an acute stroke, by using stents. This contradiction of conventional wisdom has been successful in 23 out of 25 patients with an acute carotid blockage by using this procedure. "Our results are significant because they offer an opportunity for patients who may need more aggressive treatment. Future prospective studies are necessary to determine which patients are most likely to benefit from this form of therapy", says Dr. Jovin, assistant professor of neurology and neurosurgery at Pitt's School of Medicine, and co-director of the Center for Endovascular Therapy at UPMC.
