Automakers lay out case for federal help

The leaders of America's beleaguered auto industry on Tuesday gave President Bush their wish list for federal policy and promised to make half their new vehicles capable of using alternative fuels by 2012 — if they get help from Washington. The CEOs of Ford, GM and Chrysler said they and Bush held "candid and productive" talks about what they called the industry's biggest problems, including fuel efficiency, the affordability of health care, trade and currency imbalances, and the rising costs of materials. For his part, Bush promised that when he meets with leaders in Asia this week, he will tell them "we expect your markets to be open for ours, including our automobiles."
