BBC Goes A Bit More Global

The BBC have announced plans to offer a separate website for international viewers. Based around BBC.com, the new website will feature adverts to help support the venture, and could become a portal for Video on Demand (VOD) in the future. The corporation wants to capture interest in popular UK content after shows like The Office have become hits abroad. The BBC currently sends all viewers to bbc.co.uk; international viewers are unable to watch some content due to licensing restrictions. The move is similar to the corporation's TV channel in the US, which features adverts on UK content. BBC Worldwide said the website "will not feature pop-up promos, animated commercials or the sort of ads that give the web a bad name". The service is expected to go live in April 2007. The BBC continue to forge ahead with it's online service. TV shows like The Apprentice are now shown on TV and online, available for a week after screening.
