Researchers link too much, too little sleep and Type 2 diabetes

Filed under: Type 2, Lifestyle Diabetes Care is reporting the results of a study on the link between sleep and Type 2 diabetes in men. The study was carried out by the New England Research Institutes in collaboration with the Yale School of Medicine. The authors of the study tracked the health status of 1,709 men involved in the study, aged forty to seventy, for fifteen years. According to the researchers, men who got too little or too much sleep were at an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes. Six to eight hours of sleep a night was found to be the most healthy. Men who slept less than that were twice as likely to develop diabetes, while men who slept more than eight hours a night were - brace yourselves! - three times as likely to develop diabetes. Also, a previous study showed similar results in women. Wha? Too much sleep? Aren't medical types and health talking heads always urging us to get more sleep? I'm confused. Basically, it all comes down to this: too much or too little sleep can screw up your metabolism, putting you at risk for major health problems like diabetes.
