Last week 33 wildlife officers and two radio technicians went to help with the Hurricane Katrina emergency in New Orleans, courtesy of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. On the way they picked up 10 Triton boats furnished by the manufacturer. In five days they rescued more than 200 people, delivered food and water, and ferried firefighters to many hot spots. Some of their workdays were 20-22 hours long. The WOs said that when they arrived last Friday, there was little organization and no police protection; now, the military has taken over and relieved their team.
