Raid finds indoor C. Florida marijuana farm

They said it was for personal use but an Indian River County couple will have to face a judge after a weekend drug bust at their home turned up 107 marijuana plants along with at least 5 pounds of the illegal narcotic. Indian River County sheriff's investigators raided their Vero Lakes Estates home on Saturday. William Young, 45, and Kimberly Young, 51, were charged with cultivation of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both bonded out of the county jail the same day. "Basically they were running a grow house. He was a truck driver and she was a claims examiner, possibly working in insurance. They were a husband and wife team," said Jeff Luther, spokesman for the Indian River County Sheriff's Office. "This was a pretty good-sized amount of marijuana," he said. The dried marijuana found in the home, located in a modest residential area about five miles south of the Brevard County line, could go for between $700 to $900 a pound on the street depending on the species and how it was grown. Some marijuana plants, which can be grown indoors using hydroponics or with heating lamps, can produce up to a pound of pot. There value also depends on growing methods and potency. "You can keep growing it, picking off the leaves, drying it. It could last you for a while," Luther said. "The husband said he was growing it for personal use," Luther said. Some marijuana advocates say the herb has medicinal value, such as fighting glaucoma or symptoms of nausea from chemotherapy treatments. Investigators also said they've seen a revival of sorts with so-called grow-houses where marijuana plants are grown indoors. Agents can sometimes be alerted to certain homes because of high energy usage. Other times, concerned neighbors tip off police, officials said. "These grow houses have starting to pop up more and more but we are looking for them," Luther said. The couple has a private home number and could not be reached for comment. A court hearing is expected to take place within the next several weeks, officials said.
