(AP) - In this undated image released by Thomas Jefferson University, a woman looks at the painting 'The Gross Clinic,' by artist Thomas Eakins in its present gallery home at the university in Philadelphia. The National Gallery of Art plans to buy the 19th century's best-known American painting, 'The Gross Clinic' by Thomas Eakins, for a record $68 million (euro 52.86 million). The sale price sets a record for a pre-World War II work of art created in the United States, according to a statement released Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, by the painting's owner, Thomas Jefferson University. The 8-by-7-foot (2.6-meter) painting shows a doctor and his students performing surgery on a boy's leg, while his mother covers her face with her hands.
