True stories from Hurricane Katrina

12th Jan 2006, 19:50 GMT

Hurricane Katrina was devastating on so many levels. The destruction to commerce, neighborhoods and individuals will be felt for years to come. I believe some of the saddest stories are those that come from the interrupted lives of the everyday person: th people who were left homeless and with no insurance, the animals without families and the people who were already suffering from health issues. One such man was Wilton Morgan Sr., 74. Married to the love of his life for over 55 years, a father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Mr. Morgan had been in treatment for cancer when his regimen was interrupted by the hurricane. As a result he missed his therapy and, believes his family, died from lack of medicine. "You've got to love the person you marry. But even more than that you've got to care for that person. You just can never stop caring," Morgan told the Sun Herald in April. "I was 18 when we got married, and Ruby was 16. I had $10 in my pocket on the day we married, and that was it. I gave $5 to the justice of the peace, and with the other $5 we got lunch, saw a movie and took the bus home Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
