Iron Man has a hole in heart
30th Nov 2005, 03:04 GMT
This summer Iron Man triathlete, Chris Legh, experienced a frightening chain of events while training for the Ironman Coeur d'Alene, in Idaho. "I felt like I had asthma coming off the bike," he said. "I started coughing and my lungs started filling up with fluid. Then I started coughing up blood. It had happened before so I just stopped and walked. It took me a few hours to calm down and straight after, I went and saw a cardiologist." Doctors discovered that Mr. Legh, age 33, had PFO (Patent Foramen Ovale), an opening between the upper two heart chambers that fails to close after birth. PFO is a condition that affects roughly 25% of the population. Legh will undergo surgery to repair the hole, and the procedure will not hinder his career in any way.
