Defending champ advances, medalist doesn't

Defending champion Austin Eaton III advanced to the second round of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship on Monday, while qualifying medalist Darin Newhouse was eliminated in the first round. Eaton, from North Sutton, N.H., beat Anton Salome of Socorro, N.M., 6 and 5 on the par-72, 7,037-yard The Honors Course. "I just played pretty steady," said Eaton, the winner last year in Sea Island, Ga.
