When is stenting necessary?

This past summer my seventy-year-old father-in-law went into the hospital for what we had been told would be a routine, out-patient angioplasty procedure. He went in early in the morning and we all expected him home by about lunch time. But by five in the afternoon we knew something was amiss when he still had not been released. That is when we learned that not only did he have several fairly serious blockages and had needed to have two stents inserted into his arteries, but that he would need to return at a later date for another stenting procedure. I believe his blockages were about 90% of his arteries, thus the need for the stents. However, a new study is raising concerns that stenting is being overused. Last month at a presentation for the European Society of Cardiology meetings in Stockholm, researchers stated that moderate arterial blockages, those blocked 50-75%, are not necessarily in need of a stents.
