Away from the kids and no chance for communication

Filed under: Lifestyle, Media, Television, Computers, Internet I just returned from spending the majority of my weekend away from home. It was my turn to relinquish the kids to their father for 48 hours. So when an unexpected invitation landed in my lap to get away, I jumped at the opportunity to hightail it out of dodge. A dear friend of mine invited me to her family's mountain house, a small 6 bedroom number, nestled high in the pine trees near Winter Park, Colorado. I packed up my toothbrush, pj's, laptop and cell phone and eagerly jumped in the car. The journey was a four hour car ride that enabled me to catch up on my phone calls. One of those calls was to my friend to inform her that I would need several hours during the afternoon to work. That was when she dropped the bomb. No Internet service at the mountain chalet and only two companies supply cellular service to the area, neither of which happened to be my cellular provider. I was so shocked I nearly turned around to go home. No Internet, unless I wanted to drive the eight miles into town. No cell phone. I felt as if I might lose an appendage if I proceeded with the madness of the trip. What if something happened to the kids? Sure, there was a land line, but not in my pocket where my cell phone always dwells. How could I possibly tear myself away from my beloved laptop? What if I needed to check my email, work, surf the web? After calling my home and my ex to leave behind the land line number, I opted to bravely venture into the unknown and let go of my phone and laptop service. And it was divine. There was no work hanging over my head because there was no possibility to work. I knew I could shut off my phone because it couldn't ring. For a brief time there were no strings attached and worries niggling at the peripheries of my consciousness. My friend and I chatted for hours on end, there was no television either, and we relaxed in a hot tub while the snow fell in the trees. I returned home feeling refreshed and ready to be a mother again and with the resolve to shut off the media more often. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
