What would you look like as a different race?

Filed under: High school, College, Making a Difference That's what girls at The Ellis School in Pittsburgh were asking themselves before using Nancy Burson's Human Race Machine. The device uses the same "morphing" technology employed by police when constructing an image of a missing person -- allowing the user to see his or her facial features converted to that of a different race. While a few students didn't feel the device was very accurate, and a few seemed more concerned with how many wrinkles they might have in years to come, the majority drew a similar conclusion: race is exterior, "it's nothing inside you." This may seem just a trifle naive -- reducing the incredibly complex concepts of race, and the relationship between race and identity, into something as superficial as a person's appearance -- but maybe that's just the point. We learn to attach such incredible connotations to a person's appearance, when -- as the Human Race Machine will be teaching students across the country -- looks really are only skin deep.
