(Reuters) - Relatives of patients watch as a nurse helps move a patient dying of HIV-AIDS in Ward 4B of Port Moresby's General Hospital. The jungle-clad mountainous South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea is on the verge of exploding into an African-style AIDS epidemic which could wipe out millions, but sorcery, shame and an ailing health system are hindering the fight against the deadly disease. Those fighting AIDS say the belief in sorcery is widespread and infected people in remote villages are sometimes thrown into rivers to drown or dumped in graves to die, while in the capital Port Moresby the stigma of AIDS sees people abandoned at the hospital or left on the street.
