Ginkgo biloba does more than help with memory

Filed under: Alternative Therapies, Ovarian Cancer, Prevention I have a terrible memory and have, from time to time, taken Ginkgo biloba to help boost my recollection facilities. After a few days I usually forget to continue taking the supplements, so I am never quite sure of their effectiveness. However, it appears that ginkgo just might be beneficial in the fight against ovarian cancer. Although some researchers have declared the study as fluff due to lack of scientific evidence, others are singing the praises. In a control study of approximately 1200 women, half healthy and half with ovarian cancer, the herbal remedies ginkgo, Echinacea, St. John’s Wort, ginseng, and chondroitin were given to both groups of women. Of those, only ginkgo appeared to be a cancer preventative, with the women who took it experiencing a 60% reduced risk of ovarian cancer. Dr. Bin Ye from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston told a gathering of reporters at a cancer prevention conference held in Baltimore this month, “4.2 percent of ovarian cancer-free women reported taking ginkgo regularly for at least six months before diagnosis, but only 1.6 percent of women with ovarian cancer reported taking ginkgo. This suggests that women who are using ginkgo may be less likely to develop ovarian cancer.” It seems like a woman can't go wrong with taking ginkgo. I hope I can remember to take mine.
