Cherkley Court is a rambling 30-bedroom Victorian mansion set in the lush countryside of Surrey, a 40-minute train ride from London's Waterloo station. It may not be particularly lovely, but it seduced Max Aitken, the minister's son from New Brunswick who rose to become the press baron Lord Beaverbrook.
