Filed under: Feeding & Nutrition, Lifestyle, Pregnancy and Birth Researchers at St. Louis University School of Public Health hope to help create a program that will help teen mothers lose weight gained during pregnancy. The school's Obesity Prevention Center has received a $3.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to determine the best way to help young mothers avoid obesity. The university plans to launch a five-year study to test the effectiveness of various strategies on 1,900 overweight teen moms, ages 15 to 18, in nine states, combining changes to diet and exercise and emphasizing how small changes in behavior can reap big results, said Debra Haire-Joshu, principal investigator and obesity center director. Overweight teens are more than 12 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes in their lifetime, and are also at risk for colorectal and breast cancer. Many teen mothers grow up in environments where nutrition is not emphasized and where healthy dining options aren't always available. Researchers say teens today enter pregnancy heavier than ever and frequently gain more than is recommended. Then, after giving birth, they're not able to lose it.
