What would we do without Santa Fe’s City Council to tell us, in the form of municipal law, what to do? Citing public-health issues, this highminded aggregation has outlawed smoking just about anywhere practicable. Also with the public good firmly in mind, it has, for the past several years, made the burning of Zozobra a Thursday-evening affair, lest marauding frat-rats or gang-bangers commit some harm on Fridays. From time to time, it sends the gendarmerie into action against jaywalkers, once again worried that the less nimble among them might find a tootsie squished, or worse.
