Whackos Kill, Dismember Manatee

Filed under: Media, Flora & Fauna Authorities in South Florida are looking for the person(s) responsible for mutilating a manatee whose corpse was found in the waters off Homestead. According to the wildlife officials who recovered the animal, the manatee had its throat slit and its fins sliced off. Why on earth would someone do this?! Who knows. But if you know what happened to the sea cow, you should contact the National Park Service. While I'm not happy about this terrible news, I wonder if it'll somehow help protect the manatees remaining in Florida. In June, you might recall, State wildlife officials voted unanimously to remove the manatee from the state's endangered species list and downgrade its status to threatened, after an annual census found a whopping 3116 manatees in Florida waters. Maybe this heinous crime will give others pause about the proposed downgrade. [Via Dive Photo Guide] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
