While most Canadians were eating dinner Wednesday night, Barrick Gold Corp. chief executive officer Greg Wilkins was fretting that he had just missed the opportunity of a lifetime. For three days, Mr. Wilkins had been trying to turn his company's hostile bid for Placer Dome Inc. into a friendly deal.
