Washington sends mixed signals to Damascus, Tehran

David Satterfield, senior adviser to the US secretary of state and coordinator for Iraq, said on Wednesday the United States was prepared "in principle" to discuss the situation in Iraq with Iran, but timing was uncertain. The remarks came only hours after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made it clear there would be negotiations.
