Notes from E3

The Electronic Entertainment Expo opens today in Los Angeles, after two days of media events from Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony and others. Random notes so far: For this morning's story, I asked Jupiter Research's Michael Gartenberg about Nintendo's contrast with Microsoft and Sony. He offers his thoughts in more detail in this blog post. A branding question: Will the name of Microsoft's newly expanded online gaming service make sense to people not familiar with the company's "live services" lingo? Out of context, thanks to the ambiguities of the English language, "Live Anywhere" could just as easily be the slogan for a residential relocation service. During its news conference, Sony offered a chart comparing the technical aspects of the PlayStation 3 to other consoles, including the Xbox 360. Microsoft, during its news conference, countered with a slide showing the pace of Xbox 360 sales compared with other consoles, including the PlayStation 2. The Xbox.com site is offering video clips of the Microsoft briefing, including the "Halo 3" trailer shown by the company. Also see GameTrailers.com for video highlights from the show. What do gaming enthusiasts think of what Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have shown? See the comments to this post on Joystiq to get a sense for some of the reaction. Microsoft's corporate reorganization meant that execs J Allard and Robbie Bach, ordinarily E3 staples, weren't on stage with Peter Moore at Microsoft's briefing. Michael Gartenberg (above) theorized that they were "probably hard at work trying to figure out how to kill iPod." But Kotaku reports a J Allard sighting here this morning.
