Union Station deal offers hard lessons on privatizing

Now that it has been about five years since the city first began negotiating to lease Union Station to a private consortium, can anybody remember why? It's a question that draws blank stares all around David Miller's city hall, which inherited the ill-starred project from the Mel Lastman regime and is now, theoretically at least, still promoting it. The original rationale for privatizing the station lies buried under such a weight of controversy, ugly politics and bad faith -- now including a major lawsuit -- that it appears to have suffocated like the victim of a mining disaster.
