Bipartisan panel advises Bush on Iraq

Washington — Seeking a new course in the grinding war in Iraq, President Bush met Monday with former Secretary of State James Baker and other members of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group that is assessing options. Bush said "I'm not going to prejudge" the report the panel will issue, but he said the goal remains an Iraq "that can sustain, govern and defend itself and serve as an ally in this war on terror." The group — co-chaired by Baker and former Democratic Rep. Lee Hamilton and including eight other members plus an array of expert advisers — is expected to make recommendations by year's end. Calling on the sage advice of seasoned wise men is an honored White House tradition. The group's key members have led distinguished careers. They are not, however, infallible.
